How to approach difficult conversations

Do you ever just avoid a conversation fearing that it might cause unnecessary conflicts?

Other times, you might avoid a conversation because, in your head, you feel that an argument on a certain issue is unnecessary.

However, avoiding such conversations and putting them off altogether is only going to hurt you more in the long run.

1. Practice active listening
When you are in a conversation, be mentally present there and focus on hearing what the other person is saying. Often times instead of hearing others we start making mental notes about our next comeback, This is a wrong approach. Instead, try listening to what the other person has to say. If you listen carefully, you are better placed to come up with a solution.

2. Avoid blame game
When approaching a conversation, don’t go straight up and start accusing the other person. This only puts off the other person more. You would be left with no solution and more conflict. While it’s good to be direct in addressing your concerns, but the approach also matters. Instead, ask them reasons for not completing a task.

3. Be direct
Don’t beat around the bush if you have a matter that concerns you. It will only create more confusion. Speak out about everything that is bothering you at least this way you are a step closer to finding a solution. Waiting for someone to pick up on your hints is not going to take you anywhere.

4. Regulate your emotions
While you might be feeling very passionate about a certain issue, remember to keep calm in the heat of the moment. In such sensitive situations, you tend to say something that comes out as if you are being rude. It is vital that you are aware of your surroundings and behave accordingly.

5. Choose a calm environment for a difficult conversation
Some might ignore this factor while approaching a difficult conversation, but it is a very vital factor as the right environment does matter. A calm and peaceful environment where the privacy of both parties to a conversation is respected is highly appreciated. It will bring productivity to your conversation as you both can put forward your concerns unfiltered.

6. Don’t go with high expectations
Approach every meeting as if it were a non-zero-sum game. In this case, one’s win does not necessarily mean another person’s loss. In simple terms, it is a win-win situation for both parties. If you go with this approach, you can avoid the curse of setting high expectations that only result in feeling more unsatisfied. It results in both parties being satisfied in the end.
