Whenever we meet a person, we subconsciously judge their personality traits. As much as we’d like to, we still fail to stay objective and unbiased. The reason behind this is the Halo effect. Once we form a judgment, we tend to ignore everything else that we see.
If we judge someone as a good person because of the way they behave or the way they dress or talk, we ignore any other signs that point in the other direction. We also find ways to explain why the signs we see are untrue and stay adamant on our judgment of that person.
The halo effect is defined as a cognitive bias in which our opinion of a person influences how we feel and think about their character before we find out the facts.
For example, if we meet a tall, dark and charming and handsome man, we may assume that he is like a prince charming and is a complete hero and a good-hearted man. While doing so we may ignore any signs that point out that he is not who he seems to be.
This is the reason we sometimes fail to understand that someone is exploiting us or fooling us. Due to the halo effect, we form a judgment that we do not let anything else override until it’s too late.
We justify someone’s bad behavior and wrongdoings because in our head they are a good person. This puts us at risk of letting in the wrong people into our lives and throwing away the good ones because they didn’t form a good first impression.
The halo effect causes us to see life in black and white and we forget that grey also exists. We form a judgment and refuse to believe that a person may have changed or we may have formed a wrong judgment. You refuse to give the other person the benefit of the doubt.
You end up being so rigid with your opinion that you refuse to alter your opinion even if you are presented with evidence that points to the contrary. This clouds your judgment and makes you trust the wrong people in life sometimes. It’s important to not be so naïve and rigid.
