Asanda Ngcobo and Olona Ndebele died after being dragged by the mayor’s convoy. The convoy had just dropped the mayor at his home in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal when the incident happened.
KZN Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli has launched an urgent investigation into the fatal car accident.
In a statement, Ntuli said that some eyewitnesses saw the vehicle travelling at an excessive speed, killing the two girls aged 13 who were walking on the side of the road. This gruesome accident has sparked a community protest in the area, with the community barricading the road demanding that immediate action be taken.
Ntuli calmed the members of the communities down as they were protesting for justice against the driver. The EFF and the DA in KwaZulu-Natal are calling for an urgent action to be taken against the driver of the vehicle. The 48-year-old driver was arrested and detained at Nongoma police station and expected to appear before the court soon.
Mayor Mncwango found it difficult to comment about the negligence on his driver’s part because he was not there but he however assured that the investigation will take place without interference.
