Retro Goal’s gameplay is straightforward. You begin by selecting your team, managing the squad and formation, and preparing to score some goals. Due to the lack of officially licensed clubs, the game features fictional teams with hilarious names, my personal favorite being “Blackpool,” an obvious nod to Liverpool F.C.
The game also presents an optional squad management meta-game at the start of each match. While not for everyone, this is well-developed and addictive. Though I’ve never been interested in Football Manager games, Retro Goal’s implementation of the system has piqued my interest.
