Nogokpo is a deity revered by the Anlos of the Ewe stock of Ghana. Its location of the same name is a village in the Ketu South Municipal of the Volta Region of Ghana along the Trans-West African Coastal Highway.
The Nogokpo shrine was reportedly first-served by Torgbui Sabah in the 1900s and according to Torgbui Agbodzalu Amuzu, the deity has its origins from Agbozume, another Volta regional town.
Many people visit the shrine to seek the trust of the gods of Nogokpo. Not the legal modern court justice system, but rather a spiritual kind. The gods of the land do not kill unjustly or harm innocent people rather the gods punish unrepentant people whose families pay the ultimate sacrifice of death.
There is a statue in the shrine which was built by the first gentleman of the land Dr. Kwame Nkrumah after he promised to build the stature when he seeks for help from the gods of Nogokpo to assist him to win his war.
He promised the shrine that if the gods help him take over from the whites, he will build the statue. It was the gods of Nogokpo who assisted him to gain independence.
The gods of Nogokpo kills anyone who fails to speak the truth and is found guilty of a crime, a family member would then be chosen to serve at the shrine to serve as a deterrent to other perpetrators. It is not the same as the Trokosi system.
They brought the shrine from Agbozome after a misunderstanding between their chief known as Togbe Sabah in 1900. He was a warlord. People hired him to fight on their behalf in battles, and he always won his battles.
He captured a lot of people during his battles and because of that many strangers are still in Nogokpo. The name Nogokpo came from the eve word “Engage Kpo a”, which means “will you stay at peace”?
Because the gods of Nogokpo kill people who steal and do not speak the truth, there is the absence of crimes in Nogokpo.
