Sunseekers looking for a change of scenery after lockdown ends could have their prayers answered by this Sicilian town selling homes for
just 90p (€1).
The sunsoaked village of Troina in Sicily, Italy is also offering buyers up to £22,000 to renovate the houses in a bid to restore the dwindling population.
Troina once dubbed the ‘Norman capital of Sicily,’ is the latest Italian town to jump on the trend of selling super cheap homes to entice
city-dwellers back to rural areas.
The move comes after an exodus of people who departed for busier areas of the country and a drooping tourist industry amid the
restrictions of the pandemic.
Mayor Sebastiano Fabio Venezia wants to bring back the village’s former glory and is even giving buyers up to £22,000 to do up some of
the more run-down buildings.
Dubbed the ‘Balcony of Sicily’, Troina boasts incredible panoramic views from its spot nestled in the mountains.
The homes are hidden away in 4,000 hectares of forest, with peaceful paths perfect for strolls and horseriding.
A nearby estate breeds donkeys and grows fresh produce, and the village is also known for its clear, unpolluted skies – perfect for
stargazing.
Its peaceful cobbled alleyways and stunning vistas could make the perfect getaway for those sick of lockdown in dreary Britain once
restrictions are lifted.
Mayor Venezia launched the scheme back in November 2020 but the 90p (€1) houses went on sale at the end of January with around 30 to choose from.
A £4,385 (€5,000) deposit is required at first, but this will be returned once the refurbishment work is finished.
Energy-efficient works are also being encouraged by an £8,770 (€10,000) grant offered to works that are eco-friendly.
Mayor Venezia told CNN: “I want to save our old district from the grave and recover its lost grandeur when it was the Norman capital of Sicily.
“The ancient urban setting must be restyled in its entirety, and I intend to do so quickly.”
To speed up sales, the mayor has even set up a multilingual team who can help with housing and legal expertise – and applications from the UK are welcome.
